Demonizing them turns my community into a reactionary force

I’ve been thinking about this idea of empathy a lot lately, and this opinion piece at the New York Times was pretty good. The line above made me think about how my community reacted over the course of this week as we watched Pete Wharmby get bullied off of Twitter. We were pretty quick to demonize the other side, but in our defense we’re known to have some slight problems with empathy. And tone. And emotional regulation. Not sure about the other side, but maybe they’re the same.

Is that empathy? Trying to find the point you have in common, instead of harping on your differences?
