So, Anthem Looks Cool

Bioware’s Anthem has been on my radar for a while. Sometimes all it takes for me to pay attention to a game is to label it as a “Destiny-killer”, because I used to feel that nothing could really knock Destiny off its pedestal. While I don’t feel that passionate about Destiny anymore, I am always on the lookout for new games that look like they’ll engage me.

IGN recently posted a video showing 15 minutes of actual gameplay, and I have to admit, it looks really nice. The game looks like a cross between Destiny and Warframe, with players moving across a large, open map wearing different mechanical suits, fighting baddies and completing objectives. Gameplay looks fast and furious, and environments looked really nice.

Things got interesting, however, when I shared the video with my brother, RegularX, and he came back with this nice little bit of analysis:

Kiyote23: One heavy, one light, one medium?

RegularX: Well I was thinking fighter, rogue, mage. The bulky tank seems like [it] does a lot of ground based shooting. The DPS rogue has quick hand to hand and the floaty mage is mostly AOE attacks. Which sounds like most every RPG ever but the look and feel seems unique.

RegularX: And more distinctly those roles than Destiny turned out to be

Kiyote23: Yeah, that seems accurate

Anthem releases February 22nd, but there are two demo periods before then. The first, from January 25th to January 27th, is a VIP demo for people who’ve pre-ordered. The second, from February 1st to February 3rd, is open to everyone. These are just demos, with limited gameplay available, and gameplay won’t carry over when the game is released.

Anthem looks cool, and I’m looking forward to getting my hands on it. I’m in a period where I’m between games, so it’s exciting to have something new on the horizon. Part of what intrigues me about it is the comments the developers have made about updating and supporting the game down the line, adding new content and hopefully expanding the storyline. I’ve been waiting for another developer to follow the path Rockstar set with Grand Theft Auto Online, and I’m really surprised that no one has done it. Maybe this one is a contender.
