Look to the present

“in Adlerian psychology, we do not think about past “causes” but rather about present “goals”

Instead of trying to unravel the why of something by looking at the past and creating a narrative, we need to look to present how this behavior is serving a need or a goal.

For example, predatory insomnia. The why is that you are stressed out and feeling out of control of your life. The how is finally feeling like you are controlling something. If you focus on the how, you can focus on changing the behavior, like maybe finding some healthier way to feel like you are exerting control.
