Load Outs in Destiny 2

I used to have a load out theory for Destiny 2, where my load out rotated depending on the map I was on. In Destiny 2, each of the original maps has two enemy races. On Earth, for example, you have the Fallen and the Cabal. Now each race has at least one enemy type which uses an energy shield, and if you overload that shield with the same type of energy, you’ll not only take down the shield faster, but you’ll create an area of effect explosion as well, damaging any other enemies around them. Sticking with Earth, a Fallen Captain has an Arc Shield, and a Cabal Centurion has a Solar Shield.

Your character has three weapons available at one time, two of which are usually capable of dealing energy damage. My concept for a load out was to have one weapon equipped for each energy type I’d be facing; in the case of Earth, I’d want an Arc weapon and a Solar weapon. Then to balance that out, I’d want to have my character class be the missing energy type, so on Earth, my Warlock would be a Voidwalker.

Titan has Fallen and Hive, so you can keep the same load out for Earth and Titan. Nessus has Fallen and Vex, so things switch. The Vex Minotaur uses a Void Shield, so the weapons should be Arc and Void, meaning that my character would switch to a Dawnblade. Io has Vex and Taken, which is also Arc and Void, so we can keep the same load out there.

When we get to the expansion maps, things change slightly. On Mercury, we have Cabal and Vex, so my weapons would be Solar and Void, and I’d switch my character to the Arc-based Stormcaller. When we go to Mars, we have Hive and Cabal, which normally would be two solar based shields, but there are a lot of Hive knights running around with arc shields, so I usually go back to my Voidwalker load out, with arc and solar weapons.

Forsaken kind of throws this all out the window, though. The Scorned will use all three types for shields. In the Tangled Shore, we run into Fallen, Hive, and Cabal, which are primarily use Arc and Solar, so again, I’ve been running in my Voidwalker load out. And in the Dreaming City, we have Taken and Hive in addition the Scorned, so again, still using the Voidwalker.

Switching between the load outs used to be more important in the first year of Destiny 2, but since Forsaken, I’ve mainly been using my Voidwalker and just making it work. It doesn’t really negatively affect my gameplay, except sometimes I run across a Void-shielded enemy, and I’m still waiting for my grenades to proc. The weapons and the armor systems changed pretty significantly after Forsaken, allowing you to tinker with the armor to make it compliment your weapons, and instead of trying to balance the different energy types, I’m trying to get a set of weapons and gear that I like and that work well together. It’s actually more complicated than just making sure I’ve got the right energy weapons at hand, and to be honest, a lot more fun.
