Does It Matter?

You have an idea for a comic. It’s a really simple, basic idea. There’s a piece of bread named Bread.

And there’s a piece of butter named Butter.

And Bread and Butter are cops! And they’re partners! And they’ve got a crime-fighting theme song!

Bread! Bready bready Bread! My name is Bread! Butter! Buttery buttery Butter! My name is Butter!

And you’re getting excited thinking about it, and starting to sketch and draw it, and you’re like, this is too easy! I saw this somewhere, didn’t I? And I’m just copying it?

Does it matter?

Does it matter if someone has already done this? Does it matter if you are riffing off someone else’s idea? Does it matter if this art is good or stupid?

What matters is that you got off your butt and started drawing. That’s what matters. Don’t stop yourself from creating with thoughts about originality or banality. Just create. That in itself is good.
