Do not focus on the past

“If we focus only on past causes and try to explain things solely through cause and effect, we end up with “determinism.” Because what this says is that our present and our future have already been decided by past occurrences, and are unalterable”

If we look to the past for the why for the present, then things become frozen and unalterable, because you can’t change the past. It’s tempting to look at your life as a story, and see how it unfolded, but that implies that it’s already been written. You’ve become a character in your own play.
